In honor of breast aancer awareness month, Fundación Wiese and the Liga Contra el Cáncer join Forces for cancer prevention in Peru

Through a collaboration agreement between both institutions, Fundación Wiese will donate and equip a modern mobile unit to conduct screenings for up to 5 types of cancer in vulnerable areas of Metropolitan Lima and 5 provinces in the country.

Cancer situation in Peru

Cancer is a growing public health issue in Peru, with over 70,000 new cases reported every year and more than 35,000 deaths, according to GLOBOCAN.

Moreover, the weak access to cancer healthcare services, especially among low-income individuals, who cannot access promotion, prevention, and specialized cancer exams, exacerbates this public health issue.

An Alliance to Save Thousands of Lives

Fundación Wiese and the Liga Contra el Cáncer will sign a collaboration agreement to eliminate the barriers to primary healthcare access, promote greater equity, and provide high-quality medical services for early cancer detection and prevention.

Thanks to this agreement, the project "Acquisition and Equipment of a Mobile Unit for Cancer Preventive Actions" will be carried out with an investment of more than 1 million soles. Through this initiative, the organizations aim to increase cancer detection coverage via accessible, efficient, and high-quality services.

This mobile unit will send a multidisciplinary medical team to vulnerable areas of the country to provide specialized care and perform cancer screenings, aiming to reduce cancer mortality.

With this initiative, the detection of early-stage cancer cases will be expanded, offering the affected population greater opportunities to overcome the disease since early detection increases the chances of survival. Furthermore, guidance and awareness will be provided to encourage healthy lifestyle habits among the targeted population.

Who will benefit and what services will be provided?

The beneficiaries of this project will primarily be men and women aged 18 and over who live in low-income conditions in vulnerable areas and lack specialized medical coverage.

The project’s scope covers vulnerable areas in Metropolitan Lima, Ica, Huancayo, Cañete, Barranca, and Huacho. The mobile unit will offer clinical diagnostic services for breast, thyroid, Pap smears, lymph nodes, and skin cancer.

The project’s goals:

  • Carry out 22 campaigns in Metropolitan Lima, benefiting 9,000 female patients.
  • Conduct 5 campaigns in the provinces of Ica, Huancayo, Cañete, Barranca, and Huacho, benefiting 2,500 patients (70% women, 30% men).
  • Conduct one urology campaign in the provinces.

A modern and well-equipped unit for cancer screening

The mobile unit will occupy a 15.58 m² area on the extended chassis of a 4×2 truck. This space will include two 4.80 m² consultation rooms, properly equipped for cancer screenings, and a 3.50 m² storage room.
