The situation of cancer in Peru

Cancer in Peru is a public health problem that is increasing, with more than 70 thousand new cases and 35 thousand deaths reported every year, according to GLOBOCAN.

The poor access to cancer health services adds to this issue, principally for people with fewer economic resources, who cannot access programs for awareness and prevention, much less specialized cancer exams, which deepens the problems associated with this disease.

An alliance to save thousands of lives

The Wiese Foundation and the League Against Cancer will sign a collaborative agreement with the objective of defining efforts and carrying out actions together to eliminate barriers to access for primary care,  promoting greater equity and offering a quality medical service for the prevention and early detection of cancer.

Thanks to this agreement, the project “Acquisition and outfitting of a Mobile Unit to carry out preventative actions against Cancer” will take place, with an investment of more than 1 million soles. Through this project, these organizations seek to increase coverage for the detection of cancer through accessible, efficient, and high-quality services.

This mobile unit will carry a multidisciplinary medical team to vulnerable areas throughout the country to provide specialized attention and carry out cancer screening exams, with the goal of helping reduce mortality from this disease.

This project will increase detection of cancer cases in its early stages, providing a better chance for the affected people to overcome this illness, since early detection increases possibilities for survival. Furthermore, it will provide information and training to promote the adoption of healthy lifestyles among the population.

Who will be the beneficiaries, and what services will be provided to them?

Fundación Wiese

The beneficiaries of this project will be, primarily, men and women 18 years of age or older who live in socioeconomic conditions below the poverty line, in vulnerable areas without specialized medical coverage.

The project will encompass vulnerable areas in the Lima Metropolitan Area, Ica, Huancayo, Cañete, Barranca, and Huacho. The mobile unit will provide clinical diagnostic services for breast, thyroid, cervical, lymphatic, and skin cancers.

The project “Acquisition and outfitting of a Mobile Unit to carry out preventative actions against Cancer” will have the following objectives:

  • Carry out 22 campaigns in the Lima Metropolitan Area, where a total of 9 million women will receive service.
  • Carry out 5 campaigns in the provinces of Ica, Huancayo, Cañete, Barranca, and Huacho, to attend to 2,500 patients, both women (70%) and men (30%).
  • Carry out 1 urological campaign in provinces.

A modern and equipped unit for cancer screening

A 15.58 m2 area will be installed on an extra-long 2×4 truck bed. This space will contain two (2) 4.8 m2 patient rooms to carry out cancer screening, as well as one (1) 3.5 m2 storage area.
